And they're going to experience firsthand why local cyclists extol the county's extensive network of quiet roads that weave across lush valleys and up forested slopes.
They'll ride on city streets that suddenly go from gritty urban backdrop to tree-lined tranquility, on lovely stretches of country road that plummet down to the valley floor and suddenly become serpentine, and through suburban and rural landscapes that capture everything in between.
And at the end, they'll tackle the slopes of Mount Penn, not once but five times, on a loop from the start-finish line at Fifth and Penn streets all the way up to Skyline Drive.
What challenges will the riders face on the way?
The route includes some noteworthy climbing from the outset, from the starting line up Walnut Street to Clymer Street, out of the Antietam Valley and the Oley Valley, into the highlands of central Berks as the riders make their way from Kutztown to Virginville and beyond, and in the Fritztown area.
Riders also will tackle numerous smaller climbs, some gradual and others short and steep, at various points along the way; this is Berks County, after all.
None are nearly as onerous as the long hauls up Mount Penn.
But even on the downhill stretches, such as down Friedensburg Road into the Oley Valley, riders will face some tight curves, and many of the narrow country roads on the course have sharp curves on the descent.
In addition, the riders will have to negotiate numerous quick, sharp turns both in the country and on suburban and city streets.
And occasionally, the riders will be able to go all-out downhill or on a nearly flat road for a significant distance, as on the descent from Dryville to Fleetwood Road, on Bowers Road.
Overall, the roads are in excellent to fair condition. Some stretches are a bit uneven, and some parts are rough and bumpy, while others are newly paved and smooth, but many are narrow, and they don't traverse the countryside so much as weave their way through it.
