George Reeves: TV’s Superman, who guest-starred on an episode of I Love Lucy, but was not acknowledged in the closing credits. Ball had two youngsters at home who believed in superheroes that they saw on television like Superman, and she didn’t want to disillusion any of the younger fans who watched her show by highlighting his real identity.
Carole Lombard: A screwball comedy actress who died in a plane crash. Lombard was a close friend of Ball’s, and after she died, Ball decided to go ahead with the series after having a dream in which Lombard recommended she take a shot at the risky idea of entering television.
Re-run: Ball’s husband, Desi Arnaz, invented this. To give Ball a rest when she was pregnant, Arnaz re-aired some of the episodes in the first season of I Love Lucy.
Lucy’s Italian Movie: The classic grape-stomping episode. For this episode, it was hard to find a vineyard that would donate grapes to be stomped on by Lucy. One was finally found, with a very tough grape-crusher lady named Teresa Terelli. Teresa spoke no English and was told to playfully wrestle around with Lucy in the grape vat. Unfortunately, something was lost in transaction, as Teresa started beating Lucy during the scene. She actually held Lucy’s head under the grape mush until Lucy almost drowned!
